Why ‘Outboard’
An outboard engine mounts on the outside of the boat and adds power without taking up space inside the hull. Outboard QA works the same way: independent review and added testing capacity that attaches to your team, or your business, without the overhead of a hire or an agency. It is deliberately technology-agnostic, and just as agnostic about age. Whether your product is built with an AI tool, a no-code builder, hand-written code, or a site that has been live for years, the questions are the same: does it work, and does it work for real people?
Independence is the point
The person who builds a feature, or writes the ticket for it, is the worst-positioned person to sign it off. They test the path they designed, not the paths your real customers take. Internal sign-off is exactly how bugs reach production. Business owners are no different. Look at your own website every day for long enough and you stop seeing what a first-time visitor finds confusing or broken. I have spent more than ten years building software, from enterprise consulting at a Big 4 firm to product and engineering teams at major insurers and fintech companies, with a formal background in human-computer interaction and computer science.
On almost every team, I watched the same pattern: the person who built the feature was also the person who approved it, nobody owned testing end to end, and bugs walked straight into production. Big companies can absorb that cost without noticing. If your website is your business, you cannot.
Every day, I open websites and find something broken within minutes: production bugs, frustrating user experiences, and poor design choices. These issues persist everywhere, from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies. Each one creates a bad customer experience and quietly damages the business’s reputation. Catching those issues before your customers do, and bringing a fresh perspective, is the entire job.
